The island of Kauai is the 1st major island that emerged from the Pacific Ocean 6 million years ago.  The Hawaiian Islands have been formed above a 40 million year old volcano on the pacific plate while it is still shifting towards the northwest still forming islands in the Pacific Ocean today.
